Professional Unloading Staff
This position of Freight Handler involves unloading trucks at grocery or general merchandise distribution centers using powered industrial equipment such as forklifts and pallet jacks. Unloading personnel are typically assigned to a specific department inside the distribution center (grocery, freezer, perishable, etc.) but may be assigned to work in other departments depending on the workload.
This is a physically demanding job that requires adequate cardiovascular fitness and involves frequent lifting, walking, bending, twisting, reaching, pushing and squatting. Handlers must possess the ability to lift 75 pounds from the floor to a height of 30 inches without assistance, and lift 56 pounds from 30 to 39 inches without assistance.
The handling of pallets and the stacking of cases by hand is an integral part of the unloading process. Cases weigh an average of 25 pounds, although approximately 10 percent of the cases weigh up to 95 pounds. Pallets weigh an average of 35 pounds, but can weigh as much as 65 pounds. Handlers can expect to process more than 100 pallets each day.
Applicants should possess reasonable communication skills and an understanding of basic mathematics. All applicants are required to pass criminal background checks and drug tests prior to employment.
